Top Lighthouse Accommodation
The lighthouse is arguably one of the coolest buildings you can live in. Living by the sea in a multi-storey building with ridiculously good views, what’s not to like?
We’ve been browsing some of the coolest lighthouse properties around the UK to bring you our favourites. Some of these were for sale, and others you can stay in as an amazing getaway!
#5 Lighthouse
Number 5 on our list of unique lighthouse properties is one situated along the North Devon coastline.
Heartland Point Lighthouse was for sale for £450,000 earlier this year. It commands a rocky outcrop of Hartland Point, on the north western tip of Devon’s coastline overlooking the Bristol Channel.
If you’re looking to get away from everyone, and we mean everyone, you can’t drive a car to the lighthouse. The house came with a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) so you could get there. Alternatively the property boasts its own heli-pad, just so you can make an entrance in style.
It was built in 1874, and the Hartland Point lighthouse was permanently manned until 1984. This is when an automated light was installed and a keeper became unnecessary.
The property is the lighthouse with an attached two-storey building, the heli-pad, circulation areas and access path that leads up the side of the cliff to the gated entrance, about 16 acres in total.
#4 Lighthouse
In Newport, The West Usk Lighthouse is a bed and breakfast which has openedrelatively recently to the public.
All rooms that you can stay in are wedged-shaped, all of which also have different themes as well. Staying here is meant to be very luxurious, as there is a hot tub on the roof and there are lots of complementary therapies.
Basically, it’s swanky and has a Tardis on its rooftop terrace which is definitely something unusual, and perhaps appeals to all you Doctor Who fans out there.
Number 4 of our lighthouse properties also offers you the experience of a 360 degree panoramic view of sea, Welsh hills and Newport in the background from the lantern room and roof garden.
And if you fancy it, the lighthouse is also a small wedding venue, licensed for 23 guests.
#3 Lighthouse
Coming in at 3 on our list is the Killantringan Light Keepers House and Lighthouse Cottage in Scotland. Perched high on a cliff with unlimited views of the coastline and sea, when it was up for sale offers had to be made over £485,000.
The accommodation in the first and main property is spread over two floors with the living rooms on the first floor to take advantage of the spectacular views.
The ground floor comprises of two bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, four further bedrooms and a bathroom.
The Lighthouse Cottage is a detached single storey cottage located beside the Light Keepers House and has three bedrooms and one public room.
The countryside in this area might appeal to the nature lover in you as its home to pine martens, golden eagles, red deer, red squirrels and natter jack toads. The grounds are approximately 3 acres and includes a grassed area which leads from the lighthouse properties.
#2 Lighthouse
This lighthouse in Dale, Pembrokeshire was on sale in February 2015: for a cool £975,000.
This dream house boasts a 360-degree sea view as well as cliff top views. All of this can be seen from your own tower observation lounge. The four (or five) bedroom home has the added extra of a three-bedroom annex. Oh and a heated indoor swimming pool.
At the time the property was used as a holiday rental, so even if you couldn’t afford the price, you could at least pretend to call the place home for a few days.
The master bedroom has a solid oak wood floor, en-suite bathroom, underfloor heating and has stunning views out onto the ocean and Cleddau Estuary.
#1 Lighthouse Property…
Our favourite pick on the list of our seriously cool lighthouse properties is the Belle Tout bed and breakfast.
Right on the Sussex heritage coast near Eastbourne it has many different themed rooms, including once which is the original lighthouse keeper’s bunk room! Because of the original features and themes, this by far makes this our favourite one of our lighthouse properties.
It was built in 1832 and decommissioned in 1902, it then became a tea-shop, then a home, then part-destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in the 50’s. It was also owned and filmed by the BBC and eventually moved due to erosion.
The actual lighthouse can be accessed and there’s a great viewing gallery sitting area at the top which looks over the sea.
Prices start from £145 a night (including breakfast) in off season, but hey, at least you can say you’ve had a night in a lighthouse!
Although they might look the part, if you don’t feel like commuting from one of these lighthouse properties to your 9am lectures, check out accommodation that’s a little closer here
