🛠️ Student Housing Winter Maintenance Tips (Yes, we know its Autumn!)

Hey students! We know it’s still feeling pretty mild right now, but winter is just around the corner—and it’s the perfect time to get ahead on your house maintenance before things get frosty. A little bit of preparation now can save you a lot of hassle (and money) later. Here’s our essential Student Housing guide to winter-proofing your home:

🔧 1. Boiler Check (Even When It’s Warm!)

Don’t let a cold snap catch you off guard. We recommend:

✅ Check that your boiler is working properly by switching it on for 10 minutes, even on a warm day. Listen for any odd noises or error codes.

✅ Check the pressure gauge—it should usually be between 1 and 1.5 bar (but check your specific boiler’s guide).

✅ Bleed your radiators if they’re cold at the top and hot at the bottom.

If you spot any issues or your heating isn’t working, submit a maintenance request ASAP - don’t wait until it’s freezing!

❄️ 2. Keep Vents Clear

Blocked air vents can cause condensation and mould. Make sure furniture isn’t blocking any wall vents or extractor fans—especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Proper ventilation = a happier (and healthier) home.

💨 3. Draught-Proof Your Doors and Windows

Even in newer student homes, draughts can sneak in. Close windows properly, use draught excluders, and close curtains at night to keep the warmth in.

💧 4. Keep Pipes Happy

When temperatures drop, uninsulated pipes can freeze. If you’re going home for the holidays:

✅ Leave the heating on low (around 12-15°C) to prevent frozen pipes.
✅ Let us know if you’re away for an extended period - we can do a quick winter check for you.

🔌 5. Don’t Overload Sockets

It’s tempting to plug in heaters, fairy lights, and every charger you own—but too many appliances on one extension lead can be a fire risk. Use power strips safely and avoid daisy-chaining adaptors.

🧽 6. Tidy Up Shared Spaces

Cold weather often means spending more time indoors, so keep communal areas clutter-free. Wipe down surfaces, empty bins regularly, and keep that kitchen clean—no one wants a mouldy mug when you’re trying to relax.
